Top 10 Places to Visit in Switzerland

In this article we offer a short list of cool places to visit in Switzerland that offer a variety of tourist attractions. This list could be much longer as there are many other places we should or could also mention here but check the Swiss section of this website for other places that are well worth visiting. Switzerland unfortunately due to the exchange rates is relatively expensive to visit, however you definitely get your moneys worth here!

1. Zurich

Well this is where many tourists arrive via the Kloten Airport and it is one of the most beautiful cities we have come across. Zurich offer so many tourist attractions not even sure where to start, you find here the best shopping anywhere, the worlds best banking, great tours with boats on Lake Zurich, fantastic travel connections to well anywhere, uncountable museums and art galleries, opera, ballet, theaters and dont forget to try the chocolate at Confiserie Sprüngli. If it would not be that expensive this would probably be where i live ?

 2. Lucerne

Now the honor to a close second place to Zurich gets to Lucerne, that also offers many tourist attractions, to start many excursions to the Pilatus, the Stanserhorn or the Rigi mountain regions across the Lake Lucerne, boat tours on the Lake many cultural events and the interesting Transport Museum ( called Verkehrshaus ) a museum dedicated to all sorts of transportation very interesting place. And yes a beautiful city to stroll around the lake and the old streets of the old town.

3. Jungfrau Joch – The Swiss Alps Main Glacier Region

Jungfrau Joch or also called the top of Europe can be reached via a spectacular train that runs trough glacier tunnels and offers spectacular views either from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, The Jungfraujoch railway station is at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 ft) is the highest in Europe. Once on top you can enjoy a fantastic panorama view to the Jungfrau, Monch, and Eiger, three of the most impressive mountains in this region and of course the spectacular view to the Aletsch Glacier. This place is at a high altitude so take it easy and enjoy the views and a walk in the snow or check out a glacier from the inside.

4. Bern – The Swiss Capital City

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and is located in the center of the country, here you find a big old town that invites to stroll under the protections of the many archs (covered shopping promenades called Lauben) along the many shops and restaurants. In 1983 the historic old town in the centre of Bern became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and yes its a beautiful city to visit. Dont miss a local specialty called the Berner Roeschti, (kind of potato hash browns overcooked or gratinated with ham and cheese) Also visit the The bears that are kept along the river Aare, it is the symbol of Bern.

 5. Zermatt – Matterhorn Region

Zermatt is one of my favorite places to visit in the Swiss alps as it offers so much in the summer time you get great hikes and trekking staring from here, train rides up to the Gorner Grat or get close to the Matterhorn and in Winter Time its a fantastic place for skiing in the alps. The city of Zermatt let only electric vehicles drive around so you wont find any traffic hassle here. Great Hotels and restaurants in many prices ranges are found here so sure some will fit your budget.

6. Lugano in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland

Lugano is such a beauty one has a hard time to ever get away from here again, it is located in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland close to the Italian border and on the Shores of Lake Lugano in between some beautiful mountains. The climate here is mild and the tourist attractions a many, a visit to close by Melide where you  find the Swiss Miniature is recommended and so is a visit to the Verzasca valley and of course a ride on a boat over the lake.

7. The Papiliorama Kerzers

I dont know you, but I love thos butterflies! The Papiliorama is a specialty Zoo in Kerzers in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, the exhibits focuses mainly on butterflies and moths. Besides the Papiliorama there are also the following exhibits: Arthropodarium, Nocturama, Jungle Trek,  Wild Seeland and much more. Well worth a visit!

8. Lake Geneva, Geneva, Montreux and the Chillon Castle

Geneva is a must visit for any diplomat as many international organizations are located here, the city lies on the shores of the beautiful Lake Geneva and along the lake we find many wine yards and beautiful villages of course we must mention Montreux and its famous Chillon Castle on the lakes shores. From here many tours can be taken and we recommend you visitfor example Mont Pèlerin for fantastic views over the lake and of course if you have a chance dont ever miss the Montreux Jazz Festival.

9. The Appenzell Mountain Region

Appenzell (or Appenzellerland) is a region and historical canton in the northeast of Switzerland. There are lots of hiking trails in the hilly landscape of Appenzell, all well worth your time and many with fantastic panorama views of the surrounding mountains. The town of Appenzell offers many great souvenir shops and fantastic restaurants!

10. The Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls are the largest plain waterfalls in Europe. The falls are located on the High Rhine between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich. Its is a spectacular and impressive sight of the power of the water rushing downhill in between the rocks, its easy to reach by car or train and restaurants at the scene offer some snacks.
